THIRUVALLUVAR - By  Sri Swami Sivananda ====================================================================== This biography is from Swami Sivanandaji’s book “Lives of Saints”. ===================================================================== About two thousand years ago there flourished in Mylapore, Madras, a born Siddha and a born poet by name Valluvar or, as he is more commonly known, ‘Thiruvalluvar’, which only means, ‘the devotee of the Valluva caste’. Valluvas are Pariahs (now called Harijans) and their vocation was proclaiming the orders of the king by beat of drum. There is a tradition that Thiruvalluvar was the son of one Bhagavan, a Brahmin, and Adi, a Pariah woman whom he had married. Thiruvalluvar was born at Madurai, the capital of the Pandyas. He is regarded as an Avatara of Brahma. His...

PHILOSOPHER-REALIST - Sri Swami Chidananda

Image
------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday, August 30, 2021. 7:08. AM. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.Introduction : Philosophy a writer once defined as the conversation carried on by the great minds across the continents over and above the head of the teeming multitudes. This, in fact, it is. The multitudes, therefore, almost entirely miss philosophy altogether. Thus one finds that serious metaphysics and deep research into questions of eternal reality shines as ornaments to the cultural structure of the race but fail to reach down and redeem the ‘common man.’ They are only treasured as precious heritage. Historically we see how the mastermind of the great Vyasa was led ultimately to feel the inadequacy of the classic Vedas and abstruse Brahmasutras for the task of universal enlightenment. The Brahmas...

THE GLORY OF BHARATIYA RISHI PARAMPARA : SRI SWAMI SIVANANDA.

----------------------------------------- Friday, July 16, 2021. 7:42. AM. ------------------------------------------- 1. INTRODUCTION : A saint is a god on earth. To him, the whole world is mere straw. To him, gold and stone are alike. To him, pleasure and pain are the same. A saint lives in God. He has realized God. He knows God. He has become God. He speaks of God. He shows the way to God. He is God-intoxicated. He is God Himself. He is one with God. Saints are God's agents on earth. God reveals Himself in a saint in His full glory, infinite power, wisdom and bliss. The saints constitute a ladder for the pilgrims to the shrine of God. Wherever saints and sages stay even for a half-second, then and there are sacred places like Varnasi, Prayag and Brindavan. A saint is a blessing on earth. Saints are the living symbols of religion and are the true benefactors of humanity. Throughout history, saints have played a great part in preserving spiritual values in the world. A saint is ...

Ancient rishis of Bharatham-1

Image
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wednesday, June 16, 2021. 9:37.AM. Post-1. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bharatiya  culture and nationalism have been evolved and fostered over the millenia by India’s ancient rishis, who at the banks of holy rivers of Saptasindhu and Saraswati had composed the Vedic literature – the very foundation of Indian civilization. The term “rishi” or “rsi” originally denoted the composers and singers of Vedic hymns. However, the rishi is also a ‘sage’ to whom the Gods revealed the Vedas (knowledge of the eternal truths about the Creator, His creation and means to preserve it). The 3 chief classes of Rishi are the Brahmarishi, born of the mind of Brahma, the Devarishi and Rajarishi or kings who became Rishis through their knowledge and austerities, such as Janaka, Ritaparna, etc. The Shrutarishi are authors of shastras as Sushruta. The Kandarishi are of t...

Dattatreya : Swami Sivananda

Image
Dattatreya : Wednesday, March 17, 2021. 07:24.AM. Anasuya is generally quoted as the model of chastity. She was the wife of Atri Maharishi, a great sage and one of the Sapta Rishis. She was well established in Pativrata Dharma. She served her husband with intense devotion. She did severe Tapas for a very long time in order to beget sons equal to Brahma, Vishnu and Siva. Once Narada took a small ball of iron—the size of a gram-grain—to Sarasvati and said to her, "O Sarasvati Devi! Please fry this iron ball. I will eat this iron-ball-gram during my travel". Sarasvati laughed and said, "O Rishi Narada! How can this iron ball be fried? How can this be eaten?". Narada afterwards went to Mahalakshmi and Parvati and requested them to fry the iron ball. They also laughed at Narada Rishi. Then Narada said, "O Devis! See, I will get it fried by Anasuya, wife of Atri Maharishi, a great Pativrata who lives in the earth-plane". Then Narada came to Anasuya and request...
